Session 2: The American Competitiveness Initiative - Panel Discussion
In December 2004, the Council on Competitiveness published a report titled “Innovate America” that concluded that innovation will be the single most important factor in determining America’s success in the 21st century. Legislation designed to enhance America’s world competitiveness has been introduced in the House and Senate and during the State of the Union address President Bush introduced an American Competitiveness Initiative. Panelists each have 10 minutes for an opening statement and/or presentation outlining issues, industry reports, and administration and congressional activities related to these initiatives.

Session 3: Legislative Topics Panel Discussion

Each panelist has 5-10 minutes for an opening statement. This will be followed by a 30 min discussion period of legislative news and issues relating to the Weather and Climate Enterprise with emphasis on progress made on programs and pending legislation that may provide opportunities for AMS members. Suggested topics include, progress on NOAA’s Organic Act, reprioritization of NASA’s Earth Science Program, homeland security issues, hurricane response, and the Federal budget outlook for weather and climate related activities. The panelists:

Recent global and U.S. experience with a range of hazards – tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, avian flu, and many others – is driving extensive rethinking across federal, state, and local governments and the private sector about coping strategies. This panel describes activities and initiatives underway in NOAA, and across the federal government more generally, as well as a mix of private-sector and government activities following the December AMS- Space Enterprise Council- U.S. Chamber of Commerce Policy Forum on Building America’s Resilience to Hazards held in December 2005. Panelists each have 10 minutes for an opening statement and/or presentation. The panelists:

Session 6: NOAA Climate Services – Panel Discussion

The U.S. Climate Change Science Program held a workshop on Climate Science in Support of Decision Making in November 2005 to discuss the capability of climate science to inform decision makers. NOAA, an active participant in the CCSP, is currently exploring options to provide such information and is seeking input on this topic from the weather and climate community. In particular, NOAA has asked AMS to help organize a series of meetings to discuss how the community as a whole can work together to improve the provision of climate information services to the nation. Planning is starting for the first Climate Services Community Meeting.
Panelists will each have 10 minutes for an opening statement and/or presentation outlining current activities, plans, requirements, and issues. The panelists:
